My Tuesday night ‘giallo’  … Blood and Black Lace  ~

~ screened at the Italian Cultural Institutein North Beach right around the corner from Coppola’s Zoetrope.

Giallo, pronounced sorta like jello is “an Italian 20th century genre of literature and film, which in Italian indicates crime fiction and mystery … includes elements of horror fiction and eroticism.”

Blood and Black Lace, a 1960’s Italian B Movie thriller was the first to be screened for the Cineforum series, curated by my friend and collaborator Laura Costantino. Mario Bava’s stylized slasher film dubbed in English; with opulent architecture, mannequins, saturation, melodrama, and with some of the brightest red blood that I’ve ever seen has been known to have influenced directors Dario Argento, Scorsese, and Tarantino.

Composition of scene with victim # 5 (? I couldn’t keep up the count) in photo above was definitely the highlight. An evening of watching blood splatter seemed to be a perfect compliment to the annual slaughter of turkeys and our upcoming holiday devoted entirely to stuffing ourselves.
